Speaking to the Dead: AI Grief Tech
From ancient rituals of shamans to the spiritualism movement of the 19th century, humanity has long sought ways to connect with departed loved ones.
AI Grief Tech is reshaping this age-old quest, raising profound ethical and philosophical questions. What strange intelligences are involved? And how is AI now speaking to the dead?

Ancient Practices and Spiritualism
Throughout history, various cultures have developed unique communication methods with the deceased. Shamans and mediums believed to possess special spiritual connections, have long acted as intermediaries, conveying messages from the dead to the living.
Shamanistic practices in many indigenous cultures, such as Africa, Asia, and the Americas involve rituals and ceremonies to contact ancestors and spirits for guidance and wisdom.
In the 19th century, the spiritualism movement emerged in Western cultures, mainly in Europe and North America. This movement popularised séances, where mediums facilitated conversations with spirits in a group setting, often in parlours and homes.
Tools like Ouija boards, developed in the late 19th century, became widely used to bridge the gap between the living and the dead. These practices offered comfort and closure to the bereaved by reinforcing the belief that communication with the afterlife was possible.
Additionally, in cultures such as those in East Asia, ancestral worship and veneration are integral to societal practices. For example, in China, rituals during the Qingming Festival involve cleaning ancestors’ graves, offering food, and burning paper money to honour and communicate with the deceased. Similarly, in Japan, the Obon festival is when it is believed that ancestors’ spirits return to visit the living, and families prepare offerings to welcome them.
I speak to the dead and spirits every day as part of my work and practice. While others might find it strange, I have been doing this since I was a small child, and it is an integral part of my daily life.
These diverse practices highlight how cultures worldwide communicate with the dead, reflecting their unique spiritual beliefs and traditions. While spiritualism is rooted in Western culture, other methods of contacting the deceased have long been embedded in the cultural fabric of societies globally.
Emergence of AI Grief Tech
In the 21st century, generative AI has emerged as a new tool (sometimes called AI Grief Tech) for grieving individuals seeking connection with deceased loved ones.
Recent articles from CNN, The Guardian, and Financial Times highlight significant developments in AI technologies to facilitate communication with deceased individuals. These technologies analyse extensive digital footprints left behind by the deceased, creating chatbots that simulate conversations based on their personalities and histories (Kelly, 2024; Milmo, 2024; Mance, 2024).
Jason Rohrer’s Project December platform has become a notable example. Initially an art project, it has evolved into a tool for creating chatbots that simulate conversations with the dead. This platform allows users to input details about deceased loved ones, resulting in interactions that can feel deeply personal and emotionally charged (Mance, 2024).

Ethical and Psychological Considerations
Critics, including MIT professor Sherry Turkle, caution against the potential psychological implications of AI-driven interactions with the deceased. Turkle argues that these technologies could prolong grief by preventing individuals from fully mourning and letting go. She refers to the allure of AI as a “seductive technology,” perpetuating a digital afterlife that blurs the lines between reality and simulation (Milmo, 2024).
Tamara Kneese, writing for Wired, warns about the burdens that may arise from using generative AI to resurrect the dead. Kneese discusses the significant maintenance required to keep digital legacies alive, including managing digital estates and the labour involved in maintaining automated systems. This process can be emotionally and physically taxing, highlighting the human cost of digital immortality (Kneese, 2023). Furthermore, she addresses the environmental and financial costs of sustaining AI technologies, emphasising that the resources required for such endeavours are unsustainable in the long term.
In MIT Technology Review, Zeyi Yang explores China’s booming business of AI-generated avatars. Companies like Silicon Intelligence offer services to create digital replicas of deceased loved ones, allowing people to interact with them posthumously. These services have become more affordable and accessible, although they still raise significant ethical and emotional concerns (Yang, 2024).
The Future of AI in Communicating with the Deceased
For me, as AI technology continues to evolve, so will its applications in realms traditionally considered metaphysical or spiritual. The integration of advanced neural networks, capable of processing and mimicking complex human behaviours and speech patterns, is already paving the way for more sophisticated and convincing interactions with AI-driven avatars of the deceased.
These neural networks, combined with vast amounts of data from digital footprints left by individuals, enable the creation of chatbots that can simulate meaningful conversations, offering a sense of presence and continuity for grieving loved ones.
Looking ahead, I wonder if augmented reality (AR) could transform how we interact with these digital avatars. Imagine visiting a gravesite where an AR projection of a deceased loved one can greet you, share stories, or even walk alongside you. This technology could provide a deeply personal and immersive way to remember and connect with those who have passed away.
Moreover, the concept of maintaining social media accounts posthumously is gaining traction. AI can manage these accounts by posting pre-scheduled messages or responding to comments, thereby preserving the digital presence of the deceased. This could help keep memories alive and comfort friends and family by maintaining an active connection through familiar platforms.
Virtual reality (VR) is another emerging technology with the potential to revolutionise how we interact with the deceased. VR can create immersive environments where individuals can visit virtual rooms that resemble familiar spaces, such as a loved one’s home or a significant location. These virtual rooms can be populated with AI avatars of the deceased, allowing for interactive and emotionally resonant experiences. Additionally, AI-driven avatars can use the deceased’s voice to read out wills or share personal messages, providing a deeply personal touch to these interactions.
As AI’s capabilities expand, these technologies’ ethical implications and societal impacts will become increasingly significant. The balance between comfort and respecting the grieving process must be carefully managed. Critics argue that constant interaction with digital avatars of the deceased might hinder the natural grieving process, preventing individuals from fully accepting loss and moving forward.
With the ability to fake voices and images, can this technology be used for damaging and illegal purposes? By what mechanisms will those who are vulnerable be able to guard themselves from being manipulated and scammed?

Liminal Technologies and Heterotopic Spaces: AI's Role in Bridging Life and Death
AI technologies that facilitate communication with the deceased can be seen as liminal technologies existing at the threshold between life and death. As Michel Foucault described, these technologies create heterotopic spaces where the living and the dead congregate in a uniquely transformative environment.
In these AI-generated heterotopias, the boundaries between reality and simulation blur, allowing for interactions that transcend traditional notions of time and existence.
This space can also be understood as operating within Basarab Nicolescu’s “third space” or “third included,” a concept that embraces complexity and the coexistence of contradictions.
This third space is neither wholly real nor entirely virtual but a dynamic intersection where the material and the immaterial coexist and interact. In this context, AI serves as a mediator, creating a space where the living can connect with the essence of the deceased, fostering a new dimension of human experience and understanding.
As many different AI technologies converge, how much of our world will be heterotopic, liminal, third space, and where will be the places that we consider ‘’authentic’’? What is the spirit or spirits of place in this context?
In my PhD, I wrote about a progressive spirit of a place where signals, code, flora, and fauna intermingle with physical buildings, histories, stories, and other dimensional beings living in multiple places simultaneously. Are we, with this technology, even closer to that vision?
Summary
AI’s role in speaking to the dead represents a profound convergence of ancient human desires and modern technological capabilities. By enabling these interactions, AI technologies provide novel ways to process grief and offer a deeper understanding of the liminal spaces between life and death.
These technologies create heterotopic spaces where the boundaries between reality and simulation blur, allowing for meaningful connections with the deceased.
As AI continues to evolve, it will push the boundaries of how we memorialise loved ones and grapple with the metaphysical implications of digital immortality, challenging and expanding our perceptions of life, death, and remembrance.
