Workshop Wednesdays
Part of our ethos in the Awhi Incubator is to promote collaborative working and studio-based practice.
To facilitate this, we created Workshop Wednesdays and Thriving Thursdays, open studios for our creatives (and invited others) to work on their own projects or together on creative themes and topics.
Taking place each week in AwhiLand, our studio located in a shop in a suburban mall, the studio-based workshops have covered MIDI, Arduino, Animation and a variety of other topics designed to upskill and open minds to possibilities.
Place-Making and Skill-Building
AwhiLand, our current pop-up studio, was initially set up through Plant Lab a previous community-based innovation lab. We were given a roll-over month-by-month lease which enabled us to use the same space for the Awhi Incubator.
The space is in The Strand, a suburban mall that has seen better days. Our retail site had been empty for a number of years before we moved in, cleaned it up and set up our lab space.
On any given day, shoppers can see our participants learning projection mapping, Arduino or simply hanging out together and working on projects.
Diverse Peer Learning
As well as just one-to-one coaching and mentoring, a number of topics have been covered during our studio sessions, including projection mapping, Vjing, animation, Arduino, MIDI and sessions on marketing and other business skills.
The studio is a place for our participants and others in the community to come along within a certain set of hours and trouble-shoot, share ideas and just hang out with like-minded peers.
Workshop Wednesday and Thriving Thursday (an additional day of similar activities) have become core to the Awhi Incubator Project, and we are excited to continue these in 2024 as we work towards our final lab.
