Plants are sending signals within a suburban mall thanks to Kim’s hard work today on our bioSignals project.
Our shop in The Strand Arcade now has the bones of an installation in the front window. Three plants are now enabled with moisture sensors and are sending signals to our server set up alongside our outdoor sensors.
AwhiLand (Shop 30 The Strand) is our creative innovation pop-up studio from Plant Lab.
It functions as the base for The Awhi Incubator Project and now as a lab space for bioSignals.
An Emerging Installation
Rapid prototyping to test ideas in practice from a user experience design perspective is a core tenant of AwhiWorld practice.
First, for bioSignals, we immediately set up sensors to send signals from AwhiLand and our garden. We initially wired up a small aloe vera (a particularly resilient plant) to send a signal to Kim’s online visualisation page and now we are building from that, adding plants and eventually different kinds of sensors and visualisations (via monitors and projection)
Eventually, the installation will be fully open to the public during our Alternative Reality Gardening Tour Lab in May this year.
Emergent and Conversational
The intention is to keep our front window in our space-changing, and evolving as we learn new practices from our peers overseas and hopefully gain their signals to play with and visualise within the space.
The installation is already a conversation starter with many people stopping by as they go shopping to check out the plants and ask questions about the technology and the project.
