Sansar VR Experiments

BioSignals research includes signal transfer in and out of virtual worlds.

 

Daniël Vandersmissen, our colleague in Belgium, is experimenting with the Sansar Virtual World.

Sansar is a virtual reality platform that emerged in 2017, developed by Linden Lab, the creators of Second Life. It represents a significant step forward in immersive virtual experiences, focusing on user-generated content and social interaction. Sansar utilizes room-scale VR, allowing users to explore virtual environments more naturally and fully.

It offers social gatherings and virtual meetups through to immersive storytelling and creative endeavours.

With its emphasis on user-generated content, Sansar provides a platform for creators to design and share their virtual worlds, fostering a vibrant community of artists, designers, and enthusiasts.

An Ongoing Collaboration

Daniël has worked with us previously in the virtual world, most notably via our BIOS project. He spent considerable time documenting BIOS and Biomodd ABD14. We used his videos in BIOS to connect our lab to his virtual lab via various portals in the gallery space.

This project has three island-based partners: the UK, the Philippines and New Zealand. Each location aims to generate and send signals in some form. Can these signals also be sent and received within virtual environments? Does connecting the locations into a VR space constitute its form of signal via Sansar or other VR portals?

So far, Daniël’s experiments have involved setting up a variety of test worlds for AwhiWorld to work within. (All images in this post are his own documentation of this process) In the future, he will engage with the other teams and set up workflows to access content—more details to come as the worlds evolve.

 

Daniël has worked with us previously in the virtual world, most notably via our BIOS project. He spent considerable time documenting BIOS and Biomodd ABD14. We used his videos in BIOS to connect our lab and projected his and Frederico Sena’s virtual lab into various portals in the gallery space. Daniël first trialled this visualisation system integration with Fred’s virtual world during BIOS|Biomodd ADB14.
